Birches Environmental Policy

  • Our commitment to the Environment

At Birches Remembrance Park and Crematorium, we are committed to managing our landscape in a way that protects, enhances, and celebrates the natural environment, providing an oasis for wildlife in the Cheshire countryside. Our approach is rooted in sustainability, biodiversity, and long-term stewardship, ensuring that the park remains a peaceful and ecologically rich space for generations to come.

  • Biodiversity and Habitat Protection

We actively promote biodiversity across the site by maintaining a variety of habitats, including:

    • Wildflower meadows and species-rich grasslands with rotating cuts to ensure good site wide biodiversity

    • Native hedgerows and buffer zones which we leave long and which provides a good diversity of native grasses and important plants for insect life – these are tucked away behind a belt of evergreens which screen these wilder areas from the park to ensure a “manicured” presentation is maintained.

    • Woodland planting and shelter belts

    • Aquatic environments such as our pond and wetland margins using native plants

These areas are managed with minimal intervention where possible, allowing wildlife—including birds, insects, and small mammals—to thrive naturally.

  • Sustainable Land Management

Our grounds are carefully managed using environmentally responsible practices:

    • Reduced mowing in meadow areas to encourage wildflowers and pollinators

    • Use of traditional scything methods to minimise disturbance and noise

    • Composting of green waste and reuse of organic materials such as woodchip mulch

    • Limited and targeted use of herbicides to avoid unnecessary environmental impact

We aim to work with nature, rather than against it, allowing ecosystems to develop resilience over time.

  • Tree and Plant Stewardship

Trees are a defining feature of the park, from mature oaks to newly planted memorial trees. We:

    • Regularly monitor tree health and safety

    • Protect root systems and improve soil conditions through mulching

    • Plant species suited to local conditions to ensure long-term success

    • Maintain a diverse mix of native and ornamental planting

This approach supports both ecological value and the beauty of the landscape.

  • Water and Ecosystem Care

Our pond and surrounding habitats are carefully maintained to support aquatic life and biodiversity. We:

    • Monitor water quality and vegetation levels

    • Encourage native plant species

    • Commission ecological surveys to guide long-term management

These measures ensure a healthy and balanced aquatic ecosystem.

  • Reducing Environmental Impact

We are committed to reducing waste and pollution across our operations:

    • Encouraging sustainable floral practices to minimise non-recyclable waste

    • Recycling and composting wherever possible

    • Using organic fertilisers and environmentally friendly treatments

  • Continuous Improvement
